Evan groaned as he reached for another package of fleshcaps.  “This is starting to get very monotonous.”

Kate nodded, leaning against the side of the stand they were currently monitoring.  “Yeah, no kidding.”

Evan gave her a look as he handed the package to a waiting Growlithe.  “Well, this isn't like you at all.  I thought you were the one who wanted to do this.”

His partner shrugged.  “Well, I figured you would rather do this than haggle with Chantelle.”

The Zangoose raised an eyebrow at her.  “What does she have to do this?”

“It was either this or try to get her to pay the highest possible price for a cartload of spoolstone.”

“Ah, I see.”

“Um, excuse me?”

Evan looked down to see a Meowth peering over the stand.  “You here for some food?  You want fleshcaps or meatroot?” he asked absentmindedly.

“Uh, meatroot please,” the Meowth replied.  Evan handed him the appropriate package.  “Thank you sir.”  He turned and headed off, but not before Evan noticed something odd.  The Meowth had a red-tipped tail, as opposed to the normal brown.  He was also having trouble walking with the package.  Evan watched as he disappeared into an alley.

“Evan, is something wrong?”

He turned back to Kate.  “Ever see a Meowth with a red tail?”

His partner looked at him.  “Uh, no.  What brought that up?”

Evan turned back to look at the alley just in time to see a Raichu stumble out of it.  This Raichu had an orange tail instead of the typical yellow.  He watched as the it walked over to a different stand and acquired another package of food.

Evan stepped out from behind the stall.  “Kate, think you can handle things here?”

The Sneasel looked between him and the Raichu, aware that something was up.  “Sure.  Just, be careful, alright?”

Evan gave her a quick nod and followed the Raichu as it returned to the alley.  Staying out of its sight, he watched as it dropped the package into a crate with another four.  Then, to his amazement, the Raichu began glowing.  In an instant, it had turned into a small black fox, with red at the tips of its ears and tail.  It sat down and began opening one of the packages.  Evan made his move.  “Neat little trick.”

The fox jumped up and dropped the package, clearly not expecting to be caught.  “H-how did you-”

Evan quickly approached the crate.  “I'd love to tell you, but that would only help you improve your technique.”

The fox quickly stepped between him and the crate.  “Wait!  Just hear me out!”

Evan sighed.  “Let me guess.  You're down on your luck and have to take what you can get, right?  Something to that effect?”

The fox glared at him.  “You have no idea just how right you are.”

Evan took a few steps back.  “Look, I'm not here to fight you.  I'm just taking back the extras.”

“Even having an idea of what my life is like?”

“Is that an excuse to break the rules?”

The two stared at each other in silence.  The fox then looked down and sighed.  He walked back to the package he had dropped.  “I'm keeping this one.”

Evan simply nodded.  The fox took the package in his mouth and gave Evan one final glance.  Then he turned and disappeared down a side path.

“A Zorua?!”

“Is that what they're called?”

“Yeah.  From what I've heard, they can change their appearance to look like any other Pokémon.”

Evan shifted the crate in his arms.  “Well, no wonder he's having such a rough time getting by.  I can see why anyone wouldn't trust him.”

Kate nodded.  “True, but I've seen a couple of Zorua in the city, and they seem to get along just fine with others.  I wonder if something happened?”

Evan looked away.  “So do I.  He was acting about our age, and it sounded like he'd been at this for awhile.  Although.....”

Kate looked at him.  “You.....recognized him?”

Evan shrugged.  “Well, he didn't seem to know me.  But something about him did seem.....familiar.”  He shifted his arms again.  “Anyways, I'm just going to take these back to Teresa.  She can sort out exactly who they originally came from.  I'll be back soon.”

“Okay, Evan, see you in a bit.”
